Tax Resources
New E-Filing Requirements
This year, taxpayers will need their Adjusted Gross Income and e-file pin from their 2015 tax return in order to e-file their taxes. This helps protect the taxpayer’s identity and eliminates fraudulent tax returns. If you didn’t file in 2016 or you do not have this information, talk to your tax professional to learn your options.
Premium Tax Credit
Starting in 2014, if you get health insurance coverage by enrolling in the health care marketplace, you may be eligible for the Premium Tax Credit. This credit is based on your income and is given to individuals to help their insurance become more affordable. When you enrolled in the marketplace, you should have elected to receive the credit up front or later on. If you receive this credit up front, you must file a tax return for that year.
Your insurance company will provide you with a statement that will have information needed for your tax return. If you elected to receive the credit later, you must file your tax return to receive it. The amount of your refund or taxes you owe can be affected. For more information, click here.
Treasury and IRS Announces That All Legal Same-Sex Marriages Will Be Recognized For Tax Purposes
The U.S. Department of the Treasury IRS ruled that same-sex couples, legally married in jurisdictions that recognize their marriages, will be treated as married for federal tax purposes, regardless of where the couple resides. Any same-sex marriage legally entered into in one of the 50 states, the District of Columbia, a U.S. territory or a foreign country will be covered by the ruling. However, the ruling does not apply to registered domestic partnerships, civil unions or similar formal relationships recognized under state law. Individuals who were in same-sex marriages may, but are not required to, file original or amended returns choosing to be treated as married for federal tax purposes for one or more prior tax years still open under the statute of limitations. For more information on this topic, click here or visit FAQ’s for answers. If your union is recognized as anything other than a legal marriage, it is not recognized by the IRS as a legal marriage for tax purposes. Click here for more information
Telephone Tax Scams Are Still A Big Issue
Tax payers are continuously being targeted by scam artist, who use intimidation tactics to scam unsuspecting tax payers out of money and their personal information. There are several things you should know that the IRS will never do:
- Call to demand immediate payment, nor will the agency call about taxes owed without first having mailed you a bill.
- Demand that you pay taxes without giving you the opportunity to question or appeal the amount they say you owe.
- Require you to use a specific payment method for your taxes, such as a prepaid debit card.
- Ask for credit or debit card numbers over the phone.
- Threaten to bring in local police or other law enforcement groups to have you arrested for not paying
If you get a phone call from someone claiming to be from the IRS and asking for money, here’s what you should do:
- If you know you owe taxes or think you might owe, call the IRS at 1.800.829.1040. The IRS workers can help you with a payment issue.
- If you know you don’t owe taxes or have no reason to believe that you do, report the incident to the Treasury Inspector General for Tax Administration (TIGTA) at 1.800.366.4484 or at www.tigta.gov.
- If you’ve been targeted by this scam, also contact the Federal Trade Commission and use their “FTC Complaint Assistant” at FTC.gov. Please add "IRS Telephone Scam" to the comments of your complaint.
Remember, too, the IRS does not use email, text messages or any social media to discuss your personal tax issue. For more information on reporting tax scams, go to www.irs.gov and type “scam” in the search box.
Affordable Care Act
Taxpayers who have enrolled in the health care marketplace will receive information statements from their health insurance companies at the beginning of the year. This statement will be used to provide your tax preparer with the information required on your tax return. Most individuals will not have to do anything new. If you do not qualify for Medicaid or MediCal, and you don’t have coverage from your job, you may be responsible for an Individual Shared Responsibility payment. For more information, click here.
